Some of my favourite titles I’ve had in my life are weirdo (go figure), dog mom, pizza connoisseur, book lover, and business owner. Throughout my life, I’ve always struggled with the fact that I was just a little bit different than everyone else. I was never a ‘go-with-the-flow’ girlie – no matter how hard I tried. I was the smart, sassy, and assertive kid. I was the rebellious, ‘forge-my-own path’ teenager. And honestly? As an adult, not much has changed besides the fact that I now embrace my uniqueness to the fullest
I’ve always had a passion for reading, writing, and learning. I was the kid who would get in trouble for staying up all night reading under their covers – my thirst for knowledge was insatiable. Fast forward to finishing high school when I was just 16, and I wanted to gtfo out of my small town as fast as possible, so I enrolled at the University of Alberta Augustana campus in Camrose. After switching degrees from Chemistry to English, I truly found my passion and began to flourish as a student. Upon graduating in 2018 as the Humanities department medal winner (an award that’s proudly displayed on my desk to this day), I knew I wanted to put my English degree to good use.
However, that was more easily said than done. After a series of mediocre jobs, I was feeling overworked, uninspired, and mostly frustrated with the direction my ‘career’ had taken. Yes, they paid for my bills (and tattoos, including the weirdo tattoo I’ve sported for 5+ years), but I was unfulfilled in nearly every way. So, I decided to make a change and quit my full-time job in May 2021… with no backup plan. Thankfully, I found freelance writing soon after and opened my first business, Writing with VanD (a play on my last name), that summer.
Although I could go into all my accomplishments over the past few years, including being published in Forbes as a ghostwriter, I know you’re here for the real tea on how Writing with VanD became Weirdos Who Write. And the truth? Over time I fell out of love with my business. It was a harsh reality that I pushed down for months. I loved writing, I loved helping clients get the results they craved, so what was so wrong? Well, I finally realized that I was presenting a brand that aligned with what I thought other people wanted from me rather than what I actually wanted to be. *Queue diving even deeper into my weirdness.* I decided to build a brand that was so completely soulfully aligned with me that it would inevitably attract the right kind of freaks, geeks, and weirdos (my people), and now I’m extremely proud of my career and what I’ve created with Weirdos Who Write.
about Dani with Weirdos Who Write! From the initial discovery call, it was obvious that Dani understands small business needs and how important content is to building brand awareness. I was hesitant with handing off this role in our business for fear of losing our company's voice to someone else, but Dani picked it up right away. She provides quality content, effective communication and has an organized process that makes the transition seamless. I only wish we would've found her sooner!”
as always. She confidently understands my brand’s voice and encapsulates it in her copy and content to engage my audience and drive conversion, I can’t recommend her services enough!”
